Is my computer technician mad?He says I have lost all of my emails and photos! My son rang me up in panic mode the other day, saying his computer hard drive was not working!! "Hey
Dad, I have lost all of my work, can you get it back for me."
My advice to him had been to backup, backup and backup. So what had he done, nothing! No Backups at all, he LOST THREE YEARS OF WORK because he did not listen! We could have taken the PC to a data recovery company, but the cost was extreme and not worth it. He was quoted $1000 AUD (as a minimum) to recover the data, way too expensive. The thing that most people do when they have a problem is try to re-start the computer many times, hoping that, miraculously, it will fix itself. My son had attempted to do this many times and he lost his data because the hard disk failed. Hopefully, if this ever happens to you, you will just turn the computer off and leave it, then call a technician and tell him (her) exactly what happened. There are things that you the user can do before you get to this point, but at this point your PC needs a good computer technician, more information is available further on in this article. However, the key to keeping all of your information is to backup, really quite a simple task. The situation that my son found himself in was an absolute worst case scenario in that he had a complete mechanical failure of the disk, however, if he had come to me before re-booting and continuing to use the computer for two more weeks we would have more than likely got his data off. Just a short note here, the data is still there, it could be retrieved but at what cost? The best way to make sure that your precious photos, artwork, thesis, or just simple letters and emails are as safe as possible is to be wise and (save money and heartache) do the most boring of thing of all: backup regularly. |
